Olivia Sedman

Olivia Sedman’s contribution to Ones to Watch 2022 is a series of prints based on the theme of heirlooms. These prints encapsulate a variety of antique items in the hope of keeping them alive throughout future generations. The project begun with enriching visits to favourite local antique shops within Halifax, and more specifically located in The Piece Hall. These surface repeats were created from primary imagery with a base layer of ink and then drawn into with a plethora of pencil crayons to add character. The motif designs are then scanned into Adobe Illustrator to assemble a variety of repeats and colourways.

Heirlooms have become increasingly important to Olivia’s personal life and taking care of her grandparents, and their parents past possessions enables a sense of belonging. Family plays a major role in her life and spending time with them is one of the most vital parts of her day. This collection intends to inject a more playful feeling, with its vibrant and complementary colour palette, into its antique emporium themes, viewing it from a new light.

All 3 of the prints will be a part of a wider collection of notebooks that will be bound by Olivia with sustainable sourced hand-crafted paper. All products in this notebook range will be created within a live brief set by the charity organisation Oxfam at The University of Huddersfield. These notebooks will be cloth-bounding using sustainably and locally sourced, unbleached cotton. The heavyweight cotton will be discharge and pigment printed, with accents of foil and flock, to create a layered and detailed outcome.
