Tailored

13th May - 2nd July 2023

Internationally renowned textile artist collective, The 62 Group is returning to Sunny Bank Mills Gallery with a new exhibition that responds to the word ‘Tailored’. Tailored celebrates textiles, and their place in the local community and economy as part of our celebration of 10 years of culture at Sunny Bank Mills.

Tailored; from the Latin verb to cut and a word we associate particularly with suits; the most common use of the cloth produced in the Mill. The work in Tailored explores multiple meanings and interpretations of the word itself and what it means to the individual artists’ practice. The diversity of the work showcases the depth and breadth of textile art as a medium and that of the 32 members of The 62 Group who are exhibiting.  Some artists consider the process of making and elements of it; the  design and weaving of cloth and the pattern, pinning, cutting and sewing of a garment. Other artists take a more narrative and personal approach to the meaning. Techniques include stitch, knit, casting, drawing and film; sculpture and installation.

Opening times: Tuesday-Saturday 10-4, Sunday 12-4. Closed on Mondays. FREE ENTRY

Speed Date the Artists! - Exhibition Closing Event

Join us in the Gallery on the closing weekend of our current exhibition ‘Tailored’, at 2pm on Sunday 2nd July to learn more from the artists about the processes, research and ideas behind some of the incredible work in the show. Each artist will have just 6 minutes to talk, before you’re whisked off to another area of the Gallery to listen to someone else!

You’ll hear from – Hannah Lamb, Jane Mckeating, Caroline Bartlett, Paddy Killer, Mark McCleish, Helen Davies, Jane Walkley, and curators Ealish Wilson and Claire Barber.

There will be some time left over at the end of the ‘dating’ to speak to the artists directly and ask them any burning questions you may have. Tea, coffee and cake will be available from our Tea Room, and our Gallery Shop will be open as usual.

This event is FREE ENTRY, but please reserve a ticket to give us an idea of numbers. Book tickets HERE.

Fragment of a Dress - a performance by Hannah Lamb

Join Hannah Lamb in our Spinning Mill Loft on Saturday 1st July for a performance based on her embroidered artwork Fragment of a Dress, which was created last year for the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth.

Originally commissioned in 2022 as part of a year-long celebration of costume and textiles at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, Hannah Lamb created Fragment of a Dress as a modern-day reflection on the special place that clothes have in our lives. She invited museum visitors to write a short piece about an item of clothing that held significance for them. The resulting handwritten passages were then carefully hand embroidered onto silk organza by a team of volunteers, which was then transformed into a voluminous skirt or dress. The work was presented with a nod to the 19th century dresses worn by Charlotte Brontë and her sisters.

Performances start at 1:30pm and 3pm

PLEASE NOTE unfortunately there is no step free access to the performance space in the loft. There is a lift that will take you to the 2nd floor, plus one flight of stairs with a handrail. Because this is a heritage building, some floor surfaces may be slightly uneven.
