Richard Scott

Richard is a musician and visual artist based in Gateshead working mainly in the fields of abstract drawing, sound art and installation.

His work explores the nuances and contradictions that different organizing principles and perceptual paradigms can generate in relation to each other: the shifting dynamics of order and disorder; figure and ground; form and content; discrete and continuous information.

His approach to drawing is systematic and his work is created by balancing various rules and iterative processes with and against each other: cognitive-manual feedback loops; interference patterns; organic/inorganic growth mechanisms.

An aspect of drawing which has been central to its role in his work is its fundamentally linear character. The process of making marks with ink on paper is bound to the incremental passage of time, and in making a piece like Time-Gestalt he constructs systems which allow this temporal property to become a structural framework.
