A SENSE OF PLACE 2014

5th April 2014 @ 8:00 am - 11th May 2014 @ 5:00 pm

A printmaking exhibition by  Shane Green, Janis Goodman, Rosamund Jones, and Mike Smith with felt sculptures by Emma Fountain

5 April – 11 May

Four local printmakers demonstrate their printmaking skills in this exhibition exploring the magic  and process of printmaking.

Janis Goodman:

Janis has been working professionally as a printmaker for over 20 years creating etchings and aquatints, which reflect her architectural training and interest in the inner city and familiar parts of the countryside. She is preoccupied with the repetitive patterns formed by roofs, windows and chimney pots and how these contrast with the organic forms of plants and especially birds. The work is detailed and atmospheric using line and then aquatint to give tone to the prints. Attracted to the unusual in the midst of the everyday her focus is on the quirky and the irregular.

Rosamund Jones

A member of the Royal  Society  of Painter-Printmakers, Rosamund had been exhibiting her beautiful, detailed engravings of the natural world and her surroundings throughout the country and internationally for many years. She spends days working on cold copper plates in woods or doing water colour notes of restless animals in humid conditions by rivers, all part of the natural world that she loves.

Shane Green

Shane’s work stems from the need to produce some form of art to represent the time we are living in. Many of the etchings and the paintings he produces are of a certain time and place, but the main theme is that of grasping time, spontaneity and a need to encapsulate time and the journey we all are upon. Split seconds, memories, and recollections dictate the hand and we are left with momentary images of time and place; the Yorkshire Landscape being a constant source of material.

Mike Smith

Lino printing has a particular fascination for Mike, whose  work is always developed from his own drawn or photographic observations . He obtains great pleasure from the ’primitive immediacy’  and serendipitous nature of a process that, in essence, is little changed from the earliest forms of printmaking .Mike’s work for 2014 has an underlying theme of ‘water’ in its many moods and forms.

Emma Fountain

Emma Fountain is a felt maker and fibre artist living in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. Originally a sculptural modelmaker, she experienced working with many materials before discovering the joys of working with fibre.
The ever-changing landscape of the dales and the creatures around her smallholding inspire her pieces. Through needle felting she endeavours to capture the character as well as the likeness of animals to produce sculpture that is life like but not true to life.
