The bin is made of vulcanised fibre, a strong and light cellulose material first developed in 1859.
It was manufactured by S. Noton and Sons Limited and dates from the early part of the 20th century when they described themselves as the largest European manufacturer of fibre goods for the textiles trade. Similar cans are still used in mills across the world today.
