We discovered some intriguing descriptions of cloth on this month’s delve into the archive. From Coolrelax, Gold Spot 1,000,000 to English Super Ventex it would seem many a marketing ploy was employed to help with sales through the years. The edges of the cloth, or ‘selvedge’ were bound in loom to prevent the cloth unravelling. Eventually, as technology developed, it became the (only) location for the manufacturer to put their mark on the cloth and the cloth description or name. As competition increased, so did the inventiveness of cloth makers & merchants in their choice of cloth names!
