Sandsgate’s beautifully carved sign now in situ

After a week of handcarving with a cold chisel and some delicate gold leaf work, Sandsgate finally has the building name sign it deserves. Simon Lumb, a professional dry stone waller and stonemason carried out the carving, patiently chiselling at the rate of two letters a day! The chisel marks that can still be seen are an indication that gold leaf has been used, rather than a paint substitute that would fill all the uneven surfaces.
