Volunteers hard at work in the Archive

Even on really hot and sunny days the wonderful gang of volunteers here at Sunny Bank Mills Archive are hard at work.  Cleaning and helping to preserving the collection and researching as they go. The selvedge reels discovered the other week are being painstakingly cleaned revealing much more of there former glory.

The Guard books in the collection are also getting some much needed tender loving care.  The Guard books are the fascinating reference system of the Archive collection and document the cloth production here at Sunny Bank Mills either by year, season or the country the cloth was going to.

Each page is being turned and cleaned and in doing so we are building an interesting insight into the cloth production through the years.  This Guard book dates back to 1887 and contains samples displayed in a very different way than all the Guard books we have researched before.  I wonder why?

It just goes to show that by turning every page is a vital and rewarding experience thanks to our dedicated and hard working volunteers.
