Frances Lee

Frances Lee is a Leeds based Ceramic Artist, currently working from her studio in Barkston House (East Street Arts).

Her work usually takes the form of white earthenware in solid or liquid form. The vessels included in this exhibition are made from liquid clay poured into moulds created by the artist from bowls and jugs and were each coated with three to four oxides.

“The glaze I used on some of the vessels was a matt stoneware which should be fired at a very high temperature. It was instead fired at earthenware temperature, giving it a different surface texture and the look of an older vessel.

The ‘Birth of a Jug’ trio were made from a small jug mould that I had some problems with making, but decided to try out with slip. This resulted in a gradual forming of the jug shape. I added cobalt oxide as well as iron, manganese and copper and a transparent earthenware glaze, which gave a completely different surface and appearance, with the cobalt being very dominant.”

‘Some of my vessels can be functional, but are intended as pieces of art, using the ceramic as a canvas.’
