JESSICA AKERMAN

Jessica Akerman grew up in Bradford and is currently based in Bristol. She studied Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art, and Art History & French at UCL.

Jessica makes decorative artworks, predominantly in textiles, ceramics, paint and assemblage. Vibrant colour is a central characteristic of her work, which draws broadly on how the body interacts with everyday realities, such as the acts of working and dressing, and the awkwardness in being a body amongst others.

Jessica uses image making and assemblage to create odd tableaux, where the botanical and animal morph. Often drawing on her History of Art training, her references include Surrealism, Pop Art and other aspects of visual and material cultures, such as interior design and 1980s television.
