KIMBAL BUMSTEAD

Kimbal Bumstead is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London. His work spans from painting and drawing to performance, video documentary and sound art.

Kimbal’s painting and drawing practice stems from his background in participatory performance art and his fascination with maps. He is interested in abstraction as a form of storytelling, and the act of mark-making as a tool to tune-in to sensory and embodied experiences. He creates visceral multi-layered artworks which he considers to be traces of his travels into imaginary landscapes.

The drawings on display in Definitions of Drawing II are part of a new body of drawing work made in response to his experience of the urban environment. Having recently returned to London, after a year living in the relative calmness of York, Kimbal was inspired by the busyness of the view from his window and the sounds he heard around him. With a soft focus and distracted ear, he draws traces of fleeting moments in a sonic and visual environment that is continually changing.

His drawings are made with dense layers of coloured pencil, re-worked with pen and paint, to create evolving compositions containing hints of bodies and beings.

Kimbal has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Leeds, and an MA in Performance and Theatre from QMUL. He has exhibited and performed internationally and has published in academic journals and books. He facilitates drawing and painting courses for children and adults, as well as participatory mapping workshops with various groups.
