RUFUS NEWELL

Rufus Newell lives and works in Leeds. In terms of process, Rufus likes to use a wet on wet technique, whereby the materials he is using are applied to each other whilst still wet. This allows for some level of bleeding between them as well as a level of unpredictability, which he enjoys.

His work includes the creation of drawings, paintings and sculptures. Rufus often uses a range of materials including paints, inks, graphite and concrete. Ranging in size from large multiple panel pieces to miniature wooden boats.

Drawing is central to my work and is often the starting point, I enjoy the fairly rapid nature of it and like to overlay and edit as I go. I often like to use a mixture of direct observational drawing combined with imaginary responses. All of the work for this exhibition feels like drawing to me, and was created within the last year.”
