Dyes and Dyeing – Past, Present and Future with Andrew Filarowski

12th May 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join Andrew Filarowski (Technical Director of the Society of Dyers and Colourists) as he takes you on a journey through the history of dyes and dyeing, explaining the transition from natural to synthetic dyes, and the effect this move had on the industry.

While financially everything was good within the industry at this time, you will learn of some of the negative aspects of dyeing and the associated environmental impacts that became apparent.

This will be told against a backdrop of local history and the dyers and dye makers of Leeds, who were innovators and developers of unique processes and were part of an international trade of major significance to the city.

The talk will also highlight the demise of the industry, the movement of jobs, and environmental concerns created in other parts of the globe.

Andrew will examine what the future holds for coloration, with some interesting moves back to where we were but, also some interesting developments moving forward.

This event is taking place as part of Sunny Bank Mills’ first ‘Threads Textile Festival’ – a weekend celebrating textiles through a series of talks, workshops and a textile market featuring over 40 stallholders per day!
