Two considered responses to the derelict remains of modern urban society from contemporary tapestry to pigmented mineral abstracts.
Empty Spaces by Clare Lane and Jane Foale is the new exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills Gallery in Farsley , itself a recent addition to gallery spaces in Leeds Bradford area. Stunning contemporary tapestries by Clare and beautifully evocative abstracts by Jane sit alongside each other in the bright and airy space of a former cloth warehouse. Both artists explore the derelict remains of urban society and the histories and identities we attribute to them. Clare’s work combines photography and digital imaging with abstract pattern design. Outline, texture and relief is added through stitch, the final composition being akin to modern tapestry. Jane takes her inspiration from the empty spaces in caverns, abandoned mines and post- industrial settings. Through repetitive processes echoing historic working practices or by allowing work to develop over time through rusting she allows time, imagination and the qualities of different materials to generate something new
