Summer School – Day 1) Playing with Clay

8th August 2023 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Free

This August, we’re running a 4-day summer school aimed at young people aged 6-11 years of age!

Sessions run from 9.30am-12.30pm each day.

PLEASE NOTE THIS TICKET IS FOR TUESDAY 8TH AUGUST ONLY.

PLAYING WITH CLAY

Day 1’s session is led by Poppy Davis, a ceramic artist and artist educator based in Leeds. She creates wheel-thrown ceramic homeware decorated with colourful gestural brushstrokes under the brand name CloD.

Using artist Jessica Akerman’s work as inspiration we will be designing and making ceramic sculptures from air dry clay and decorating them with colourful patterns and textures.

This Summer School is perfect for children who love making and creating! Each day we will be doing a different mix of creative, engaging, and playful arts and crafts – including textile collage, ceramic sculpting, drawing, creative writing, and more! There will also be some movement and dance activities!

Every day will have a different mix of activities inspired by the works in the Gallery exhibition ‘Definitions of Drawing II’, and led by a mix of experienced freelance practitioners and our Gallery team. Each day the children will respond creatively to a piece of work by a particular artist in the exhibition.

We would like to end the summer school with an exhibition of the work made during the programme which will be displayed in the 1912. Family, friends, and the public will be invited to view the work and engage in creative activities themselves- continuing the creative fun. Sunny Bank Mills Gallery champions the work of emerging and early career artists- in working with young people we can inspire the next generation and continue this legacy.

The aim of Summer School is to make this summer’s creative, playful and fun activities accessible for young people. Allowing children to make new friends, develop new skills and experience an arts environment in their local area. We want to integrate the creativity and voices of the younger generation in the heart of the mill. Have them involved and become part of the shaping of its future.

All materials are included, and no previous art experience is needed.

Please ensure children wear clothes they don’t mind getting messy.

Each workshop also includes drinks & snacks for every child.

Suitable for school aged children aged 6-11 years old.

Parents need not attend, but must drop off and pick up children promptly.

This workshops will be taking place in the 1912 Mill space which is located inside Sunny Bank Mills complex. There will be signage on the day to guide you.
