Phulkaris from Punjab with Saima Kaur
May 14 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
During this interactive talk, artist Saima Kaur will share her love of Phulkari embroideries and explain how they have informed her practice. She will share examples of specific Phulkaris to illustrate their context, use of colour, and their form, before showing examples of her own work.
The talk will include a demonstration of some of the techniques and stitches she uses and how they can become the basis for creating work that is full of joy, colour and magic!
This event is taking place as part of Sunny Bank Mills’ first ‘Threads Textile Festival’ – a weekend celebrating textiles through a series of talks, workshops and a textile market featuring over 40 stallholders per day!

Saima Kaur is a Yorkshire based textile artist specialising in hand embroidery inspired by Indian folk art. In particular, her work is informed by the figurative folk embroideries of Punjab, India, known as Phulkaris. Kaur applies their bold use of colour, illustrative qualities and storytelling techniques to her own work in a bid to create hand embroideries that are places of dreams, magic and play. She often adds text and humour to her work, giving them a very contemporary quality.
Kaur studied Contemporary Arts and previously worked in the Arts and Museum sector. She is now a full time textile artist and freelance tutor. Kaur makes and sells work for interiors alongside delivering community projects that explore wellbeing and acts of kindness.
