Irene describes herself as an incomer to Farsley having ‘only’ been here 20 years!. Following retirement she learnt to spin and began to take an interest in local history and in Farsley that means one thing – woollen textiles and the man changed an industry, local hero Samuel Marsden.
But who was Samuel Marsden? Irene will talk us through her journey from a very patient librarian at Leeds Central Library, microfiche and some good old fashioned rummaging. The life and career of Samuel Marsden began to emerge.
In her talk she will explain why he was so important to the prosperity of West Yorkshire and her discoveries about Samuel’s life, character and career as well as looking at how Merino changed the face of the textile industry in West Yorkshire from her experiences as a spinner and knitter.
This is an informal talk with a limited number of attendees, so you will be given plenty of chance to ask Irene questions and you will also get the opportunity to visit the Archive yourself as part of the event.
We strive to be as accessible and inclusive as possible, and thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, not only are all tickets subsidised, but also, this event will be BSL interpreted as well as being able to offer a limited number of free Accessibility & Inclusivity tickets to Deaf and disabled customers, and also to students.

The venue of the talk (the Bobbin Room & Archive) has flat access into the building, and a short ramp in one area. The building also has accessible toilet facilities. Thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, this talk will be BSL interpreted.
