Weaving Voices – Woven World with Agnis Smallwood

14th October 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free
Join Agnis in the Bobbin Room and Archive to hear how she uses Sunny Bank Mills Archive as inspiration for her creativity

Join local weaver Agnis Smallwood as she talks about her practice, her collaborations with Sunny Bank Mills and her passion for sharing her weaving knowledge with others. The format will be a 1 hour talk and walk around the Archive with Agnis as she intertwines and makes connections between her work and objects within the Archive. She will also deliver a weaving demonstration explaining how the loom works and the process of weaving, bringing the loom to life. This element of the afternoon will be followed by an opportunity for you to wander freely around the archive.

Agnis will give an insight into how weaving offers limitless possibilities when weave structure, colour and fibre choice are intertwined together. She will share the inspiration behind her own collections of work, both for exhibition as well as products for home interiors and wearable accessories, and how at the heart of her work is her obsession with colour.

You will learn about how Agnis’ love of the traditional technique of weaving is woven throughout the projects she curates and delivers and how weaving still holds relevance today. Agnis has worked within the Archive, Gallery and in the Weaving Shed here at Sunny Bank Mills for several years and will be sharing about some of the projects she has been involved with.

This is a hands on informal talk with a limited number of attendees, so you will be given plenty of chance to explore Agnis’ work and ask questions about her practice. You will also get the opportunity to visit the Archive yourself as part of the event.

We strive to be as accessible and inclusive as possible, and thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, not only are all tickets subsidised, but also, this event will be BSL interpreted as well as being able to offer a limited number of free Accessibility & Inclusivity tickets to Deaf and disabled customers, and also to students.

About Agnis

“I am a Designer Maker Researcher and Educator specialising in weave. I live in Leeds and work across Yorkshire and beyond as a freelancer. As well as designing and weaving my own work I am passionate about creating opportunities which enable participants to explore traditional craft techniques like weaving for themselves. I have worked across all age groups and within many different settings including within local communities, schools, museums and galleries. I graduated in 2009 from Cumbria Institute of the Arts, with a BA in Contemporary Applied Arts and later in 2017 with an MA in Artist Teachers and Contemporary Practices from Goldsmiths, University of London”
