Anna Hall

Anna Hall is a self-taught artist from Leeds. She is currently studying BA Art and Design at University of Leeds, set to graduate in 2026.

She works predominately with water mixable oil paints to produce impressionistic paintings, usually depicting those around her. Her practice involves the use of impasto and alla prima methods to capture a vivid sense of life and movement. She prioritises likeness over accuracy, working quickly and allowing her paintings to evolve naturally.

The pieces displayed as part of Ones to Watch are products of impasto and alla prima methods. Rather than focus on the details, Anna used blunt strokes of thick oil paint to sculpt the likeness of the figures, leaving some partly unfinished areas to draw an eye to the centre point of the piece. Her aim is to capture a raw image, a seized moment without it losing life’s movement. This is Anna paints quickly and with somewhat clumsy strokes, she doesn’t focus on an outcome, but instead lets the paintings evolve naturally. “Sprawled”, “Party Bags” and “Pippa” reflect this impromptu approach.
