Donna Lowson

Donna Lowson, a final-year BA Fine Art student at Sheffield Hallam University, works as a fine artist in her studio at Bloc Projects, Matilda Street, Sheffield.

She is a sculptor and installation artist exploring identity, systems, and power structures, drawing inspiration from her landscape as a mature, working-class, neurodivergent woman through the materiality of hair. Her work transcends individual experience to evoke collective socio-political narratives, probing the depths of human existence and societal constructs with profound insight.

Using biography, Donna Lowson delves into the intricacies of identity and the human experience. Hair is her medium, guiding a self-reflective journey transcending personal boundaries. The adaptation of felting techniques, both wet and needle, breathes life into her creations.

Metaphorically exploring shoes, she perceives them as vessels carrying us through life’s diverse landscapes. Through her work, shoes metamorphose into vessels connecting us to the past and propelling us into the future. Lowson delves into the tensions between exploitation and consumerism, elegance and discomfort, beauty and the grotesque, aiming to provoke introspection and deeper contemplation on what surrounds us daily.
