‘The Wonderful World of Paste & Paper’ – not an advert for a fancy wallpaper show, but rather an insight into the daily workings of a Conservator with West Yorkshire Archive Services.

It was a delight to welcome Shirley Jones to our Weaving Voices event in the Bobbin Room on Saturday to give us an insight into her world.    A real treat for paper lovers.

Shirley talked us through the options open to a paper conservator from dry treatments all the way through to paper washing.  Yes its a thing!  We looked at the mouldy and grotty; cleaning; tears, repairs, infills and what can go wrong. It was a thoroughly enjoyable session with fabulous demonstrations by Shirley and opportunities to get hands on and have a go.

Demonstrations and opportunities to get hands on

As with all our Weaving Voices events, everyone was invited through to the Museum & Archive and were able to have a look at our very own grotty and mouldy. Many of them are battered and bruised from a lifetime of use and we can’t underestimate the difference it makes being able to clean and if possible repair them knowing we can give them a future.

We couldn’t do it without help and guidance and also our committed team of volunteers who every week literally get their hands dirty joining ‘the mucky hand gang’!
