Weaving the Web

The Archive here at Sunny Bank Mills has been successful in obtaining funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.   So, we are starting 2022 working hard to create a wonderful project.  The project ‘Weaving the Web’ will be working closely with the students at West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre Powerhouse.

It became clear through the pandemic that the Archive collection and stories were not as accessible as we would have liked.  We started to look at how the Archive and the textile stories of the objects and the people could be made more accessible.

To address our online access our new friends at West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre Powerhouse are going to work with our web designers to make the website more accessible for their needs and wants.  Learning from the students to find out what works on the website and what we could do to improve our accessibility and inclusivity.

In addition, we will be working with an experienced photographer to create a visual record of the collection in the Archive for the website.  This will be an interactive gallery of objects using 360 photography and again with the help of the students, we will curate an online gallery of the collection.  Through this experience, we will all learn about 360 photography and gain skills to create workshops in the future that many more community groups can access.  Our wonderful Archive volunteers will also be helping and learning new skills to help deliver the workshops.

This year is going to be a busy one but also a great opportunity to learn new skills and make the site and website just that little bit more accessible and inclusive.  Watch this space for more updates throughout the year.

Thanks to The National Lottery players, this important and exciting project can take place and help to create lasting connections with all our community and their heritage.
