About Hugh Roberts

Recent Leeds Beckett graduate Hugh Roberts tackles personal and political issues head on, with a pinch of silliness. The images he makes are about drawing out the stories and narrative from the current climate in addition to reflecting on more personal thoughts, feelings, and emotions. His practice focuses on creating dynamic collages using an eclectic mix of found materials, comic books, and photography. He remixes miscellaneous items and brings together various types from different sources to make new contemporary creations. Each piece is process driven; Roberts manipulates, and distorts imagery. He recycles and appropriates old and new elements to make work with a timeless pop surrealist twist.

Collage forms the basis and driving force of much of his work, and this influence remains present across different mediums. He fragments images and shapes to create new stories from disparate stories. The work provokes thought and generates new narratives to make engaging, subversive and humorous work.

I tend to make work with an expressive self empowerment that will spur you on but also with a humble hat on. As a recent graduate, at this point in my practice I am still fairly new to my ideas and ways of working. I use this to my advantage exploring and developing ways of creating and understand my artistic voice and abilities in visual communication.
