Disciplining the Surface

Contemplating how political and social history is reflected in the dynamics of fashion, Disciplining the Surface alludes to the stripping away of ornament in Western masculine clothing. A movement from an aesthetic of excess to one of efficiency, closely aligned to ideas of routine and convention. From ruffs, ruffles and lace, darts and folds to starched, stiffened and ironed shirts and the conformity and social levelling of the tailored pinstripe suit.
