Concrete Taster Workshop – Make a concrete planter

8th October 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

£44.00

Join Artist Jo Woffinden in our Spinning Mill Studios to learn the basics of concrete casting and produce your own planter and 2 coasters!

Students will learn the processes involved in casting concrete objects through practical hands-on making and enquiry and importantly have fun while creating! This one-off workshop aims to provide students with an introduction to the material and the skills and confidence to make concrete objects independently at home, with minimal resources and tools. Jo welcomes people with any level of experience to join the taster session and classes are taught in small groups of up to 6 people.

What happens in this class?

The concrete taster session offers the opportunity to learn about the raw materials that make up concrete through developing a concrete recipe that will be mixed and cast during the workshop.

The aim of the concrete workshop is to explore this incredible material and to encourage the confidence to try out your own personal projects. While learning about the unique properties and nature of concrete, students will gain insights into the whole making process, including casting techniques and finding or making suitable moulds.

Concrete has the fantastic ability to copy any surface it is cast against and can be formed into any shape in its liquid form before it hardens. Colour pigments can also be added to the concrete mix to colour the concrete and this will be explored in the workshop.

The cast concrete objects will require 1 day to cure and can be collected from Sunnybank Mills Gallery within 4 weeks of making.

Attendees will need to bring:

An apron or an old shirt to protect your clothing. Bring a notebook and pen for your concrete recipe and a calculator could be handy too.

Optional – bring a piece of material with low relief texture that you would like to use as a texture test tile to form a coaster (size to be under 10 x 10cm). Most non porous materials with shallow textures work fine such as, textured plastic food packaging, textiles e.g. lace/netting, textured rubber, waterproof card or wallpaper.

Provided by the tutor:

Gloves, dust mask and goggles. If you have any of your own PPE that you would like to use you are welcome to bring it along to use.

Pre-made moulds, tools, mixing bowls/jugs, weighing scales and raw materials.

About your tutor:

She has taught extensively over her career including as a Technical Instructor at the Royal College of Art and at Liverpool University’s School of Architecture as a guest lecturer.
