Inspiration from the Archive – a talk from artist Jane Walkley

9th September 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Join Jane in the Bobbin Room during Heritage Open Days ’23 to hear how she uses Sunny Bank Mills Archive as inspiration for her artwork!

If you visited the Mills for Threads 2023 and were intrigued by Jane’s incredible work as part of Tailored by the 62 Group, this is your opportunity to learn more! During this talk, Jane will discuss her creative process and explain how the Mill’s Textile Archive has influenced her work.

This is a hands on talk with limited capacity, so you will be given plenty of chance to handle and examine Jane’s work and ask questions about her practice.

About Jane Walkley

“I am a UK based artist exploring the interplay between memory, place, and attachment. I use traditional tapestry techniques whilst incorporating jesmonite, an eco-friendly resin, which I cast by hand in my studio in West Yorkshire. The finished work takes on a sculptural and tactile quality that maintains a physical and visual connection to the site I am researching, linking place, memory, and materiality.

The site where my current work is centred is Sunny Bank Mills: A place that has undergone loss, change and re materialisation. I consider how derelict buildings, specifically those destined for demolition or regeneration, invoke memory and feelings, and how site-specific interactions can bridge the gap between memory and place in the absence of these buildings.

The weaving sheds at Sunny Bank Mills were atmospheric spaces that held evidence of their past use; the derelict, the decayed and the re-purposed. It is these buildings and the people who worked in them that my research focusses on. My research captures the living memory of the weavers, finishers, warp twisters, burlers and menders to understand individual and collective attachment to these spaces.”
