Make a Spring Themed Zine with Laura Alice

March 3 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

In this workshop you will learn about what zines are, be able to explore Laura Alice’s collection of zines and make your own zine to take home.

What is a zine? A zine is a name for a small scale DIY publication, usually made using lo-fi processes such as cutting, pasting and photocopying. People often make zines about things they are passionate about; this may be birdwatching, knitting, a band they love or activism. It is an accessible format where anyone can have a voice.

The workshop will begin with a bit about zines and their history and the chance to peruse through a broad collection of examples. Laura will then show you how to make your own cut and fold zine. You will be provided with lots of inspirational imagery such as bird books and fresh flowers to draw and respond to. From this you will create your own Spring themed zine.

No prior experience or skills necessary.

All materials and tools provided.

Suitable for ages 14+. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

This workshop will take place on the 3rd floor of the 1912 Mill, the venue for our artists’ book and print fair, Printed Bound. Visit our Eventbrite collection to see the rest of the weekend’s workshops, and see our website for more info and a full list of stallholders. CLICK HERE.

About your teacher

Laura Alice is an illustrator and printmaker based in West Yorkshire. She has 12 years of experience in teaching art and delivering workshops in printmaking, illustration and zine-making. Laura’s own practice takes inspiration from her walks in nature where she sketches and records in response to her surroundings and bird sightings. However, her punk roots are where she developed a love of zines; going to gigs, playing in bands, going to art school… all lead her to collecting these scrappy pieces of art and wisdom. She’s made a few herself too and been featured in some as a musician, artist and roller skater!
