Phulkari Embroidery Workshop with Saima Kaur

Following on from her talk, join Saima in our inspiring Spinning Mill Artists’ Studios for a hands-on workshop where you will learn to print and embroider geometric and figurative phulkari motifs.
Traditional materials will be provided for this workshop and each learner will have the opportunity to learn the primary stitch used in Phulkaris using both cotton and silk threads. By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a mini artwork that they have started in the workshop and can further develop at home.
About Saima
Saima Kaur is a Yorkshire based textile artist specialising in hand embroidery inspired by Indian folk art. In particular, her work is informed by the figurative folk embroideries of Punjab, India, known as Phulkaris. Kaur applies their bold use of colour, illustrative qualities and storytelling techniques to her own work in a bid to create hand embroideries that are places of dreams, magic and play. She often adds text and humour to her work, giving them a very contemporary quality.
Kaur studied Contemporary Arts and previously worked in the Arts and Museum sector. She is now a full time textile artist and freelance tutor. Kaur makes and sells work for interiors alongside delivering community projects that explore wellbeing and acts of kindness.

Workshop and course bookings can be cancelled and refunded up until 7 days before the scheduled start date. As materials and equipment are ordered in advance, we regret that refunds cannot be offered less than 7 days before the workshop date. Please note that Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.
