Threads Textile Festival 2023

12th - 14th May 2023


Sunny Bank Mills is launching ‘Threads’ – a weekend festival celebrating textiles through a series of talks, workshops and more, part of our celebration of 10 years of arts and culture at the mills.

Threads Textile Festival will open on 12th May in the textile Archive with a day of talks on dyeing by leading experts in the field followed at 4.30pm by the preview of new exhibition, Tailored, by the 62 Group, in the Art Gallery, with music and refreshments.

A series of textile talks (SEE BELOW) will be held during the weekend (13th-14th), with keynote speaker being the fashion historian Amber Butchart.

You can also book onto one of our textile workshops (SEE BELOW) including dyeing, weaving, embroidery, quilting and print.

Students from Leeds Arts University will be holding a pop up fashion exhibition featuring their beautiful tailored jackets at 2pm on Saturday afternoon in the Old Woollen. Free entry

You can visit our textile fair. In our historic 1912 Mill there will a wide range of stallholders selling everything from yarn to sewing materials to hand made clothing to soft furnishings and textile art. Open 10am – 4pm on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th May. Book now for £3 entry in advance or pay on the door (under 12s free). Free parking. Scroll down for a full list of stallholders.

There will be the opportunity for tours of the textile Archive on Saturday and Sunday together with history tours of the site.

Many of the Mill’s independent businesses will also be open over our festive weekend. You can visit The Art Rooms and Just Lovett Designs in Red Lane Mill, The Emma White Jewellery Studio in the Twisting,  Ewe Neek/ Lili of the Valley in the Mending Rooms, Mill Creations School of Sew, SCRAP (Fri -Sun) and Arlington Interiors in the Spinning Mill, Beckett & Beckett in the Festoon Rooms as well as our food and drink outlets – Amity (Fri from 1pm; Sat/Sun from 12pm), Botanic Request, Farsley Fire & Smoke (pop up outside the 1912 Mill), Test Bar, Grumpy’s, Mill Kitchen, and Saint Jude.
