Stitching Resilience Workshop with Claire Wellesley-Smith

This hand stitching workshop explores textile as a daily practice through Claire’s Stitch Journal, now in its tenth year. You will make a series of textile samples and have the opportunity to discuss textile making as a tool for community and individual wellbeing.
The workshop will take place in Sunny Bank Mills’ atmospheric Weaving Shed, home to our collection of traditional dobby looms. This is the perfect environment to give yourself some head space and absorb yourself in creativity for a couple of hours!
Materials are provided but you are welcome to bring threads and small scraps of fabric that hold meaning for you to include in your work. Please bring a simple sewing kit including scissors and a pincushion.
About Claire
Claire Wellesley-Smith is an artist, writer and researcher based in Bradford. Her practice includes long-term community-based projects and residencies that use textile making to explore textile heritage. Her PhD at The Open University was a multi-site ethnographic research into community resilience through engagement with textile heritage and craft and was based in post-industrial textile areas in West Yorkshire and East Lancashire. Her most recent book ‘Resilient Stitch: Wellbeing and Connection in Textile Art’ was published by Batsford in 2021. She teaches and lectures internationally.

Workshop and course bookings can be cancelled and refunded up until 7 days before the scheduled start date. As materials and equipment are ordered in advance, we regret that refunds cannot be offered less than 7 days before the workshop date. Please note that Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.
If we need to cancel the course for any reason your ticket will be fully refunded.
